Abstract:
The paper will explain the technical adaptations, challenges and benefits associated with the conversion to biomass firing of three of DONG Energy`s power plants: Avedøre Power Station unit 1, Studstrup Power Station unit 3, and the addition of a fourth wood pellets mill in Avedøre Power Station unit 2. The projects in Avedøre Power Station unit 1 and Studstrup Power Station unit 3 involve the conversion of the existing coal firing facility to biomass firing. The systems affected will include fuel transport, fuel storage, fuel treatment (milling), combustion systems, boiler, primary air system, building installations, electrical and control system. The projects will utilize experiences gained from building unit 2 at Avedøre Power Station. Rambøll was awarded the engineering contracts for the projects, which include feasibility studies and the execution projects. Unit 2 at Avedøre Power Station is currently able to run about 80 % load on wood pellets using three mills. By adding a fourth mill 100 % load on biomass could be achieved and is vital in order to be able to supply biomass based district heat in an amount required for Copenhagen to reach its goals of being a CO2 neutral city.
