Abstract:
Beside the conversion of biomass into charcoal, large scale Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC) can also be seen as an efficient climate friendly alternative to lignite, as it improves the greenhouse gas balance. Two exemplary projects are funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in the program for “Promoting Projects to Optimize the Use of Biomass for Energy Production” (“Biomass energy use”). The focus of their research is the HTC as an innovative conversion process to transform biogenic residual materials from municipalities into high-quality biogenic solid fuels. The optimised HTC coal will be used either as a solid fuel in combustion process or in an entrained-flow gasifier for regional energy supply of electricity and heat by a motor-CHP. The focus of the paper is on the results of the project aiming for an “Integrated utilization plant and strategy for community biomass for the regional Halle Municipal Water Management and Waste Disposal Company” in Germany. As similar potentials for energetic use of organic waste also exist in other communities, the created concepts should be transferable to them and thus be subject to repeated use.
