Abstract:
Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) have been conducted on samples of Junglans regia shell (JS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to evaluate the devolatilization behaviors of JS, PVC and JS/PVC mixtures. Active pyrolysis zone starts at around 210oC and ends at around 420oC for JS, whereas this zone allocates two temperature ranges (250-380oC and 380-560oC) for PVC. It is observed that JS-PVC blends showed the same thermal decomposition behavior as single PVC. Kinetic parameters are calculated in the range of active pyrolysis zones by using Arrhenius and Coats Redfern methods. There was an agreement between the results of these methods. For single PVC and JS-PVC blends, activation energies were calculated as 225 kJmol-1 and 157 kJmol-1, respectively (at the heating rate of 5oCmin-1). Due to the lower activation energy, there is a synergistic effect was seen for JS-PVC blends. This could be explained by the influence of products formed during JS degradation on PVC degradation mechanism. Furthermore, the difference of weight loss, .w was defined to investigate interactions existed between JS and PVC. Maximum difference between experimental and theoretical mass loss is 8.01% at 321oC at the heating rate of 10oCmin-1. These results indicate addition of biomass to PVC effects positively to thermal decomposition.
