Abstract:
Olive stones (OS) have high carbohydrates content and could be a suitable material for sugars production by two-steps hydrolysis process: with inorganic acids followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the remained solids. Firstly, pretreatment of OS by dilute sulphuric acid, at high temperatures (190ºC–215ºC) and a high solid/liquid ratio (1/3), was investigated in this study. Olive stones in fragments were used with their original sizes. D-xylose was the major sugar in the prehydrolysates, with a maximum yield of 18 kg/100 kg of raw material that was achieved at 200ºC for 5 min. Under those conditions it was possible obtained a D-xylose concentration of 59.2 g/L in the direct liquor (63.1 g/L as sum of D-xylose, L-arabinose, D-galactose and D-glucose). Finally, solids derived from the first stage were submitted to enzymatic hydrolysis researching the effect of substrate size in the D-glucose yield. The results indicated that higher pretreatment temperature and solid sizes between 0.125 and 0.6 mm enhanced the enzymatic hydrolysis conversion (till 19.3 g D-glucose per 100 g OS). However the highest overall sugar yield (36 g of sugars from prehydrolysate and enzyme hydrolysate, from 100 g of raw material) was reached at 205ºC.
