Abstract:
Four clones of C.cardunculus were produced by micropropagation of selected individuals grown in Portugal and Spain; subsequently, they were tested in a field experiment carried out in central Spain. Plant traits of the four clones were studied in order to get insights into their potential for oil production. Intra-clone variability for some studied traits suggested phenotypic plasticity and other factors -besides the vegetative propagation- influencing clones’ performance. The number of heads per stalk was revealed as a key plant trait for oil production despite the fact that many heads per stalk implied lighter and smaller heads.
