Abstract:
Introduction of Flexible Food and Feed MiniBiorefineries can counteract on rising food and feed prices by redirecting silage for use as feed on the local market or use the pretreated fibre fraction combined with DDGS as a valuable feed. Thereby the MiniBiorefineries can improve market stability. The proposed crop rotation scheme combined with agricultural waste and biodegradable waste from the municipalities will increase the local biomass supply and utilization dramatically, improving the rural economy and employment. Based on scientific results from 3 EU projects the work will introduce an Integrated Biomass Utilization System (IBUS) converting conventional high yielding feed crops (whole crop silage, beets etc.), straw and other farm waste products to feed and fuel on minibiorefineries in close collaboration with farmers within 1020 km. Supplemental feedstocks can come from biodegradable municipal solid waste (BMW) and local industries and supermarkets. Flexible minibiorefineries offers a system, which can make utilization of 2G bioethanol economical feasible, and eliminate any food vs fuel concerns in connection with utilization of 1G feedstock for energy purposes.
